BUSINESS In China, HemaXiansheng (a chain of fancy supermarkets) recently created a new shopping experience called ¡°Eat-as-you-shop.¡± The eat-as-you-shop idea is really a simple home-delivery service where the supermarket¡¯s customers can eat inside the grocery store.
The significance of the project is that it was developed by Alibaba (China¡¯s e-commerce giant) to allow online customers to buy from physical businesses. In China, 85 percent of Chinese still buy their products from physical store locations. There are more than six million small shops that account for 10 trillion yuan ($1.6 trillion). Alibaba wants those shops to buy products from its partners (such as Procter & Gamble), giving the local shops advice on what to stock and, in return, receiving important data on spending habits from people it can¡¯t reach on its own.
